From members of BIGBANG’s G-Dragon and BLACKPINK to rookie group BABYMONSTER, they all made a successful comeback, lighting up the K-pop industry.
BIGBANG’s G-Dragon is back with a powerful impact. On October 31st he released the single “POWER”. This solo return, G-Dragon’s first since his 2017 mini-album Kwon Ji Yongit was highly anticipated.
The lyrics, “Second generation limited edition, the masterpiece of the century” and “I got the power, the power, power, 88 fly high,” reveal his pride as a K-pop icon.
“POWER” topped major national music charts such as Melon, Genie, Bugs and VIBE, and its music video surpassed 10 million views on YouTube within a day of release. On Melon, cumulative ratings exceeded 820,000 as of November 1.
Additionally, he made a rare appearance on a variety show on tvN Take the block quiz on Oct. 30, his first in 12 years, and will perform at the MAMA Awards 2024 on November 23.
BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Rosé continue to dominate the music charts with their respective releases. Jennie’s recent solo track, “Mantra,” finds her competing with Rosé’s “APT.”
Jennie set a record for a K-pop female soloist for the first time by reaching number 37 in the Official UK Singles Chart with “Mantra”, and entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at 98 on 26 October.
Later, Rosé’s duet with pop star Bruno Mars, “APT”, rose to No. 4 and then No. 2 in the Official UK Singles Chart, surpassing Jennie’s record.
With its addictive and repetitive chorus, “APT” reached No. 2 on the Official UK Singles Chart and No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, both major international charts. Nationwide, it topped real-time and daily charts on major music platforms such as Melon, Genie, and Bugs upon release.
Jennie and Rosé are showcasing their powerful brand not only as members of BLACKPINK but also in their solo activities, strengthening YG’s stronghold in the girl group scene.
With support from G-Dragon, BABYMONSTER recently returned with their debut full-length album, Dripwith songs like “Drip” and “Click Clack.” BABYMONSTER’s stage presence is attracting attention, positioning them as a promising new group that embodies YG’s identity.
BABYMONSTER’s “Click Clack” music video surpassed 10 million views in approximately 21 hours. Through “Drip,” they also solidified their “YG DNA” identity. The “Drip” MV registered 18 million views in one day.
Billboard noted that “BABYMONSTER marked the year beautifully with their debut album full of catchy songs, highlighting their music as a driving force for K-pop’s global reach.”
