In the world of K-pop, where talent and charm often take center stage, Red Velvet’s Wendy stands out as a rare gem: not only a powerhouse singer but also a top academic student. Her exceptional background recently resurfaced and went viral, especially since she is the only female K-pop idol to ever receive an academic award from former US President Barack Obama.

Born Son Seung Wan in 1994, Wendy grew up in a multicultural environment, having lived in South Korea, the United States and Canada. He attended the prestigious Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Minnesota, a top-tier boarding school with tuition of more than $55,000 a year, before moving to Richmond Hill, Ontario.

While studying in North America, Wendy boasted a near-perfect academic record, achieving excellent grades and consistently ranking at the top of her class. She also led a maths competition, made the school’s honor roll and was recognized for her contribution to the elite Vocal Fusion choir. She graduated with a GPA of 3.92/4.0.

Wendy’s well-rounded profile, from academics to leadership, earned her a coveted award from President Barack Obama for academic excellence and community leadership, making her the only known female K-pop idol to receive such an honor. Her achievements also earned her a place on tvN’s “The List 2016” of South Korea’s most academically gifted celebrities, joining the likes of Gong Hyo Jin and Beenzino.

In addition to her academic accolades, Wendy is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Korean and plays several instruments including piano, guitar, flute and saxophone. These talents laid the foundation for his seamless integration into the K-pop industry when he joined SM Entertainment in 2012 as part of the pre-debut team SM Rookies.

She debuted with Red Velvet in 2014 via the single Happiness, quickly gaining acclaim for her emotionally rich and technically proficient vocals. Wendy quickly became recognized as one of the most powerful and versatile singers of the third generation of K-pop, balancing both group and solo activities.

After dealing with a serious onstage accident in 2019 that required a long recovery, Wendy made a strong comeback and released her first solo mini-album Like Water in 2021. The album showcased her matured vocal color and artistic identity, earning praise for its lyrical depth and emotional resonance.

In 2025, Wendy officially parted ways with SM Entertainment after over a decade, but continues to perform with Red Velvet. He also signed with ASND Entertainment, marking a new chapter in his career characterized by greater musical freedom and personal expression.
