The nation bids farewell to Ahn Sung Ki: Lee Jung Jae and Jung Woo Sung will carry the coffin

On the morning of January 5, news came that Ahn Sung Ki had died in the intensive care unit of Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Seoul. The veteran actor has died at the age of 74, six days after being hospitalized for cardiac arrest.

Sports Kyunghyang has since released the first official details regarding his funeral. According to the report, Ahn Sung Ki’s funeral will be held as a film industry funeral, jointly organized by the Shin Young Kyun Arts & Culture Foundation and the Korea Film Actors Association. Famous actors Lee Jung Jae and Jung Woo Sung will serve as pallbearers, personally carrying the late star’s coffin in a final show of respect.

The memorial service for Ahn Sung Ki will take place in Room 31 of the Funeral Hall of St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul. The funeral procession is scheduled for January 9 at 6 am, after which he will be buried at Byeolgeurida Cemetery in Yangpyeong, as chosen by his family.

Previously, on the morning of December 31 last year, several Korean media reported that Ahn Sung Ki was rushed to hospital after collapsing at home while eating. He was found in cardiac arrest and immediately transferred to the emergency room, where doctors performed intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was later transferred to the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Ahn Sung Ki had been battling blood cancer since 2019. Over the past six days, medical staff made every effort to save him, but he ultimately died peacefully in the presence of his family.

Born in 1952, Ahn Sung Ki was widely considered one of South Korea’s most respected and beloved national actors. Over the course of his illustrious career, he appeared in more than 130 films and received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of his lifelong dedication to acting. In 2019, he gained attention for his role in the film The Divine Furystarring Park Seo Joon, which became a major hit across Asia and earned widespread praise from audiences.

As the nation prepares to say its final farewell, Ahn Sung Ki’s legacy as a pillar of Korean cinema and a symbol of artistic integrity will live on through his countless works.
