G-DRAGON made his return to the public with a new song after a hiatus of 7 years and 4 months. His new digital single, “Power,” released on the 31st, captivates listeners with its addictive beats and intense rapping, showcasing the charm of hip-hop.
The witty lyrics, full of ambiguous expressions, push listeners to think deeper, highlighting his genius.
The day before, the 30th, G-DRAGON appeared on tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” and described “Power” as a song about strength. He stated, “For me, power is music,” and reflected on how significant the influence of the media was during his 7-year hiatus as an outsider. He explained that the song contains various meanings, including satire on the power of the media and the importance of harmonizing different types of strength.
The accompanying music video also drew admiration for G-DRAGON’s witty style and swagger, befitting “an icon of an era”.
“Power” marks G-DRAGON’s first solo song since the release of his EP “Kwon Ji Yong” in 2017, and received warm response in various online communities immediately upon release.
Since G-DRAGON has been less active as a singer during his hiatus, most listeners have eagerly pressed the play button. The reactions to “Power” have been different.
Comments included: “As expected from G-DRAGON. It really deserves the title,” “Absolutely a G-DRAGON song,” “The beat is exciting and really beautiful,” and “It keeps echoing in my ears.”
On the other hand, some expressed disappointment, saying things like “It seems old”, “I wish the lyrics were clearer”, “Did I expect too much?” and “The beat is good, but it’s not a title track, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see.”
Notably, the music video features scenes that appear to be the tracklist for G-DRAGON’s new album, including “Home Sweet Home”, “I Belong to You”, “Take Me”, “Too Bag”, “Bona Mana” , “Drama” and “OYRO-DROP”.
As the first Korean artist to reach the top spot on both the Billboard World Albums Chart and the Oricon Digital Chart in Japan, all eyes are on G-DRAGON to see what legendary records he will set with this pre-release track.
