Controversy continues over the non-celebrity contestants on “Culinary Class Wars.”
On November 1, Yubibim admitted to running an illegal business, saying: “I tried various businesses, from selling fruits to running a food stall to running a beauty salon, but every venture failed. Since 2003, I had been running a restaurant in an unauthorized location, which led to my arrest and suspended sentence. I deeply regret my actions and closed the shop for a year.“
He also revealed that he had registered the business in his wife’s name to get around regulations, adding: “Now I intend to return to my roots, focusing on bibimbap research and writing a comprehensive bibimbap encyclopedia. I plan to offer my former restaurant space as a free venue for bibimbap exhibitions and performances and will do my best to repay with the best ingredients, operating legally in the new location in Hanok Village.“
The controversy affected the appearance and content of Yubibim. “You Quiz on the Block” decided to completely edit its segment, and “Wow! Really? This Is Incredible” also made its preview video private following the controversy. Additionally, as reported by OSEN on November 7, Dongwon F&B, which used Yubibim as a model, deleted posts featuring Yubibim, choosing to sever ties.
While “Culinary Class Wars” has enjoyed considerable popularity, it has also led to controversy as some participants’ pasts have been revealed. A notable example is the privacy scandal involving Triple Star (Kang Seung-won). Dispatch reported that Triple Star married “A” in May 2022 but divorced just three months later, uncovering controversy over his private life, Michelin employment pressure, verbal abuse and threats.
According to reports, A said he gave a luxury bag to a contact to help Triple Star, who was studying abroad, secure a job at a popular restaurant, using the contacts to arrange an interview opportunity. A also revealed letters allegedly written by Triple Star, who was later reported to the Seoul Gangnam Police Station for suspected embezzlement.
Chef Lee Young-suk has also been involved in a debt dispute. In April 2010, Lee Young-suk reportedly signed a promissory note after borrowing KRW 100 million from “B” to prepare a local cuisine restaurant. Lee Young-suk’s team responded “All debts have been repaid. This is malicious slander“, but recent reports indicate that his stake in “Culinary Class Wars” has been seized.
