Stray Kids Accused of Copying BTS After ‘HOP’ Mashup Video

A mashup video of songs from Stray Kids’ upcoming album, “HOP,” was released on December 6 and garnered attention.

Unfortunately, shortly after the video was released, several netizens claimed that a part of the song “Walkin on Water” sounded similar to the flow of a verse from BTS’s V in the old BTS track “Jump.” This has led to a huge debate on online forums.

For starters, several Stray Kids fans pointed out that “Jump” was sampled from another song of the same name by American hip-hop duo Kriss Kross, so the similarities could come from the original song.

However, BTS fans pointed out that V’s verse in BTS’s “Jump” was a unique BTS addition and was not included in Kriss Kross’ jump at all, insisting that Stray Kids copied BTS.

“The problem is… BTS sampled the original, while Stray Kids sampled the original BTS part that wasn’t in the sampled song. There should be two credits, the original singer of ‘Jump’ and the members of BTS, in particular Yoongi (real name of Suga from BTS). But the problem is that they didn’t. So it’s a simple imitator“a netizen said.

In response, Stray Kids fans argued that the stream heard was from a mash up video, so the real “Walkin on Water” may be something different.

“This is called a mashup, it’s transformative and doesn’t necessarily sound like the real song, sampled beats are fair use””, insisted one.

So far, a video comparing the two songs has surpassed 2.6 million views, while neither Stray Kids nor BTS have spoken out about the situation.
