Recently, director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is behind the success of “Squid Game,” gave an interview in which he discussed the recent controversies surrounding the series.
Notably, when asked about criticism regarding the casting of TOP, which had a drag scandal in the past, the director honestly responded that he “didn’t expect” criticism of TOP to continue.
Then, soon after the release of “Squid Game 2”, a bizarre incident occurred. Park Sung-hoon, who played a transgender character, unexpectedly posted an explicit cover of a Japanese adult video (AV) on his social media. The image, which is basically a poster for a porn parody of “Squid Game,” in which women were kidnapped, forced to play and raped when they lost, shocked not only Park’s fans but also director Hwang Dong-hyuk .
When asked if he felt upset that his painstakingly crafted work – achieved at the cost of losing 6 teeth – had been turned into an AV parody, Hwang Dong-hyuk nodded gravely.
“It’s extremely upsetting. I heard similar parodies were made overseas during ‘Squid Game 1’. Since they are made overseas, we can’t even stop them, which is really frustrating. It completely distorts the original meaning of the work,” said the director.
He then commented on the Park Sung-hoon scandal, saying, “I haven’t had a chance to talk to Park Sung-hoon yet, but I also want to understand why he posted something like that.
Meanwhile, Park Sung-hoon’s agency initially issued an apology and explanation for the controversy, but later admitted the false explanation in an additional statement.
Later, the script reading session for Park Sung-hoon’s upcoming drama “The Tyrant’s Chef” was cancelled, sparking speculation that it had to do with the actor’s scandal. However, his agency denied such rumors.
