The flames started on the third floor of the four -storey building and in the end they spread on the fourth floor, completely destroying both levels. Although the local authorities sent teams almost immediately, according to what was reported, it took 262 firefighters who worked tirelessly for over seven hours to completely turn off the fire.

While trying to keep the flames under control, a firefighter was injured after being hit by the fall of steel debris and was immediately taken to the hospital for care. Two construction workers who were trapped in the building were successfully saved, while four others evacuated safely.

The National Hangeul Museum hosts some of the most critical heritage objects related to the Korean language, such as Jeongjo letters and writings, the 22nd monarch of the Joseon dynasty and the first collection of poems of Korea, “Cheggu Yeongeon”.

Fortunately, the fire has not damaged the museum’s artifacts, which are held in a separate deposit. The museum is intended to transfer the entire collection of about 89,000 historical objects to the nearby National Museum of Korea.

The National Hangeul Museum has been subjected to large renovations since October last year and should reopen within a year. However, due to the significant damage caused by the fire, a reopening of October may no longer be on the horizon.
