On her 17th debut anniversary, Sooyoung hilariously shared her true feelings about having less screen time and parts in SNSD. Why didn’t she become the center of the group?
On September 9, Episode 1 of the YouTube web show, “Hey, Come Here” Season 2, was released on Super Junior Donghae and Eunhyuk’s channel.
On this day, Sooyoung appeared as a special guest and the three recalled their memories as former SM Entertainment artists.
In particular, K-pop idols talked about how the line distribution under the label worked and how the middle part was assigned to some members, instead of having a rotation system.
Donghae revealed:
“When forming a group, positions are fundamental. We had our positions clearly defined.”
Sooyoung agreed that the same goes for Girls’ Generation and mentioned the famous “Bermuda Triangle” of YoonA, Yuri, and Seohyun as the fixed center of the group.
However, as for Sooyoung, she was not given such a role and explained:
“But I didn’t have anything like that. I didn’t know about the middle positions. I guess I didn’t realize it mattered. And I didn’t think it mattered either. I thought I could work hard on the edges.”

However, as the group progressed, he initially thought it wasn’t just that the other members hadn’t been given their chance and expressed his frustration in a lighthearted manner, saying:
“They’re still the same… I was wondering if I could have a chance, too. Now I have my own moves. Like in ‘Genie,’ I could do something like that. There’s no reason why I couldn’t.
But since it’s been set for a long time, who doesn’t know? Who doesn’t know how cute YoonA is? They might rotate things a bit. They might give someone else a chance. Since everyone already knows she’s cute.”
The SNSD member went on to talk about spending less time in front of the screen and said:
“I thought, Can’t I have a little more screen time, like 3 seconds?”

However, when she looked back, Sooyoung realized that it was for the team, and YoonA is truly unrivaled. She tried to focus on the singing position, but Taeyeon came. When she bent down to dance, Hyoyeon was there too.
Continuing the topic, Sooyoung recalled the time when she fought hard to get more parts during the distribution of lines in their seventh year, the “Lion Heart” era.
She asked the A&R team if she could sing the whole song to help them gauge which parts would suit her. Although she was embarrassed, she gave it her all only to get a disappointing result.
“When I heard it again, I thought I had done pretty well. But then they gave me my part, and it was the rap part. Looking back, I think the parts were already decided from the beginning. At least I tried.”
