On the morning of December 2nd, Song Kang-ho attended an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, before the release of the movie “One Win” (directed by Shin Yeon-sik).
Starting the interview, he addressed the controversy: “During an interview a few days ago I chose the wrong word and it seems that many volleyball fans felt uncomfortable about it.“
He explained: “I see volleyball as a powerful and broad-spectrum sport. It naturally involves strong and powerful energy. What I intended to convey is that volleyball, in addition to its strength, offers a wide variety of entertainment through its detailed techniques, strong teamwork and intricate strategic plays, which make watching the broadcasts endlessly enjoyable. However, I understand that volleyball fans felt upset and uncomfortable and I deeply regret it.”
Song Kang-ho pointed out: “If my poor choice of words caused any discomfort, I sincerely apologize.”
The controversy stems from his remarks during a press conference and preview of “One Win” on Nov. 28. He declared: “Since it’s volleyball season these days, I watch volleyball broadcasts every day. Men’s volleyball is very attractive, but I like women’s volleyball for its beauty. It is a sport that emphasizes teamwork above all.His use of the word “cute” was criticized by volleyball fans as inappropriate.
Meanwhile, “One Win” tells the story of a volleyball coach who has never tasted success in his life, meets a women’s volleyball team just one win away, and takes on a challenge. Directed by Shin Yeon-sik, known for “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet” and “Cobweb,” the film explores themes of perseverance and teamwork.
Song Kang-ho plays the role of Kim Woo-jin, a volleyball coach who has never won a match, either in his life or in his career.
The film will premiere on December 4.
