On September 24, Son Ye Jin made his long-awaited cinematic return after seven years through director Park Chan Wook’s new film “No other choice”which attracted 2.66 million viewers and continues to perform well at the box office. In the film, Son plays Mi Ri, the wife of Man Soo (Lee Byung Hun), a man suddenly fired from his company. Her emotional portrayal of a woman holding her family together amid crisis won critical acclaim and audience praise.
This return marks Son’s first film since then “The Negotiation” (2018), where she also starred alongside her current husband Hyun Bin. Despite initial fears before the release, Son successfully overcame his anxiety thanks to the film’s critical and commercial success.
At the 30th Busan International Film Festival, where “No other choice” opened the event, candidly confessed his Son, “Sometimes I wonder how often and how long I can continue to do this kind of work as an actress.” Subsequent interviews revealed that Mi Ri’s role was originally smaller in the script, but Son decided to accept the project because she “She wanted to show more of her acting after seven years away from the big screen” – a decision he now makes “the right one”.
After “The Negotiation”Son reunited with Hyun Bin in this global hit drama “Shock Landing on You”, which turned their on-screen chemistry into a real-life romance. The couple married in 2022 and welcomed their first child in November, a major turning point in the actress’s life.
Reflecting on motherhood, Son said: “My life has changed completely. It’s not about what has or hasn’t changed: everything has changed.” She admitted she felt worried about how the public might see her as one “melodrama actress” after giving birth, explaining that she worked hard to balance her identity as both a mother and an artist.
The son continued to actively promote “No other choice”appearing in stage greetings also in its fourth week of release. Recently, she delighted fans by sharing several photos on social media featuring her new short hairstyle, writing: “Finally we come to meet you again! Let’s meet at the theater this Saturday: who hasn’t seen ‘No Other Choice’ yet? Or wants to watch it again? Let’s get together!”
