YoonA and Sooyoung were both born in 1990, making them friends of the same age within Girls’ Generation.
However, the former has been speaking formally to the latter for 17 years, even calling her “unnie”, a Korean honorific used by women to address a woman older than them.
During YoonA’s appearance on the YouTube web show, Hyoyeon who buys our food wellMC and co-member Hyoyeon instigated the real reason why their youngest member refuses to use casual speech with her.
“Because Sooyoung herself is intimidating, it doesn’t work, right? I should distort (the story),” the host joked.
YoonA who heard this denied that that was the reason and started telling her story.
“From an early age, I became friends with my grandparents, and I’m good at maintaining that. Even if I talk informally and act like a peer (with Sooyoung), it would get awkward. If I did it with the unnies, I might have to do it with everyone ,” the idol explained.

“If they had met me first, for example, if someone had said ‘Speak calmly,’ then I would have said, ‘Okay,’ I could have treated you as if we were friends of the same age. But first I called you ‘unnie’.”
As the show went on, Hyoyeon continued to move forward with her agenda of controversy between YoonA and Sooyoung and mentioned the unofficial performance unit SNSD-SHY (Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Yuri.
“YoonA couldn’t join SHY and felt a little left out because of that. YoonA has also been part of the dance line since our trainee days… Why didn’t you join? We kept asking you to join us, ” Hyo asked.
“Maybe the unnies didn’t recognize my abilities,” YoonA replied jokingly.
“Did Sooyoung say that?” Hyoyeon retorted, making viewers laugh.
