SNL Korea faces backlash after ‘mocking’ Hanni’s appearance at the National Assembly

SNL Korea is getting a rap on the knuckles for its parody of NewJeans Hanni. In her latest episode, the actress reportedly mocked the idol’s expressions, words and gestures.

On October 19, the latest episode of the show Coupang Play featured veteran actor Kim Eui Sung.

One of the parodies they did was when Hanni attended the state check of the National Assembly, where she spoke about concerns of bullying and harassment at work. There, the idol had the opportunity to discuss HYBE, Belift Lab, and ADOR’s new management over the bullying and ostracism she and her group faced.

Hanni also urged the company to resolve the matter as soon as possible and expressed his hopes for improvements so that no senior, junior, intern and colleague would experience what he went through.

During the parody, actress Ji Ye Eun, who played the role of Hanni, wore an outfit similar to that of the NewJeans member during his concert at Tokyo Dome.

Ji also imitated the way Hanni spoke with a slightly awkward Korean accent, alluding to the “Ditto” singer’s Australian nationality and Vietnamese blood.

When Bunnies (the NewJeans fandom) saw it, they were “disgusted” by how the show downplayed Hanni’s courage to speak out against her label and fight for their rights by showing “racial discrimination”.

The fandom complained:

“They arbitrarily distorted and adapted Hanni’s statements to create dialogue and, by presenting the audit as if it were a celebrity opportunity, insulted the goal of improving the working environment for workers.”

The Bunnies are currently planning a movement to request a review by the Korean Communications Standards Commission through the National Petition Center regarding Hani’s travesty of state control.
