Singer So you (SISTAR) is facing mixed reactions online after claiming to have experienced racial discrimination aboard a Delta Airlines flight. However, several witnesses have since come forward with conflicting statements, claiming that the singer was intoxicated during the accident.
ON October 20thSeveral posts emerged in Korean online communities from people claiming to have been on the same flight as Soyou. One user wrote, “So you seemed drunk and said you were too tired to eat the meal on board. I also heard the crew tell you that passengers should not board if drunk.”
The witness continued: “It was embarrassing to see her say it was racial discrimination. As a Korean and a fan, I was ashamed. The flight attendants handled the situation professionally.”
Another passenger also shared a similar account, stating: “It was a night flight, so I didn’t notice at first. But later it got loud and when I looked, it was Soyou. She asked for a Korean flight attendant because she said she couldn’t read the menu while she was drunk. There was no security guard involved.”
The controversy began when So you posted about her means of social communication the previous day, uploading a photo of himself Delta Airlines boarding pass and claiming that it had been treated unfairly by flight crew during his return trip to Korea via Atlanta after finishing a program in New York.
He wrote, “I was exhausted and simply asked a Korean flight attendant to confirm the meal times, but the purser judged my attitude and treated me like a problem passenger. They even called security.”
So you continued, “I had to say, ‘If I’m the problem, I’m getting off,’ and endured cold stares for the rest of the 15-hour flight. At that moment, I wondered if this was racial discrimination.”
He added that he couldn’t eat during the entire flight and concluded: “No one should ever be questioned or humiliated because of their race.”
This isn’t the first time Delta Airlines was accused of discrimination against Korean celebrities. In 2023, Girls’ Day Hyeri criticized the airline after her the first class seat was downgraded to economy without notice.
At the time, Hyeri expressed her frustration, saying: “I booked a month and a half in advance and chose my seat, but they downgraded me without explanation. When I asked for a refund, they told me to take the next flight instead.”
Delta later apologized, citing a change of aircraft for safety reasonsand he said it the fare difference was refunded.
Soyou’s accusations have sparked a heated debate among Korean netizens. Some sympathize with his experience and question the airline’s handling of the situation, while others side with the witnesses, criticizing Soyou for the potential misrepresent events.As of now, Delta Airlines has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
