Known to have severe allergies, Shu Qi had to drastically change her lifestyle. She gave up her favorite foods like hot pots and mangoes, avoided raw, cold and spicy dishes, maintained strict sleep schedules and even controlled her body fat to around 22 percent to prepare for pregnancy.

In her quest for motherhood, she turned to both traditional Chinese medicine and Western treatments. She underwent acupuncture three times a week and consumed herbal medicines twice a day for six months. Additionally, she repeatedly tried ovulation induction injections and underwent multiple rounds of IVF.

Unfortunately, the couple had to face one disappointment after another. Doctors eventually concluded that, due to her age and physical condition, Shu Qi’s chances of a natural pregnancy were extremely low, and that even in vitro fertilization offered only minimal hope.

According to QQ, Shu Qi once considered freezing her eggs in 2009, at the age of 33. At the time, she shared that while she wasn’t ready to become a mother yet, she wanted to preserve the option in case she changed her mind later. However, her busy schedule prevented her from completing the project. By the time she reached her 40s and married, her body was no longer so accommodating.

From age 41 to 49, Shu Qi spent nine years desperately trying to conceive. She revealed that during hormone treatments, her body swelled, her face broke down badly and her emotions became unstable. He also experienced irritability and depression, admitting that he couldn’t bear to look at himself in the mirror during that time.

Understanding her difficulties, superstar Andy Lau also stepped in to help her by recommending the best fertility specialists in Hong Kong. However, despite these efforts, her desire to become a mother remained unfulfilled.

Through all this, Stephen Fung never pressured her to have children. He turned down numerous opportunities to be by her side, adapting his lifestyle alongside hers, quitting alcohol and smoking, and supporting her every step of the way.

Whenever Shu Qi felt discouraged, he consoled her by saying: “Even without children, our life is still complete. The person I married is you, whether we have children or not, it doesn’t matter.”

By 2024, the couple decided to stop treatments and began considering adoption instead. Shu Qi also shared that she now regrets putting in so much effort and subjecting her body to so much suffering for so long.

Although she was unable to realize her dream of giving birth, Shu Qi continues to be admired not only for her successful career but also for having a partner who deeply supports her. In addition to acting, he has also gained recognition as a director, even winning the Best Director award at the Busan International Film Festival with his debut project.
