The Emmy Awards were held on the morning of September 16 (KST) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Known as the Academy Awards of the American television industry, the Emmy Awards are divided into the Primetime Emmy Awards, which honor actors and directors, and the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor production and technical staff.
One of the most anticipated categories in Korea was Robert Downey Jr.’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor in an Anthology or Limited Series or Film for his role in “The Sympathizer,” directed by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. Despite Downey Jr. playing four characters, he did not win the award, which went to Lamorne Morris of “Fargo.”
Korean-American actress Greta Lee was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “The Morning Show,” but lost to Elizabeth Debicki of “The Crown.”
The documentary “Beyond Utopia,” which features Korean-American expert Sue Mi Terry, was also nominated for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, but did not win.
The biggest winner was Disney+’s “Shogun,” which won 18 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, becoming the most-awarded single production in Emmy history. When Hiroyuki Sanada won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Korean-American actor Steven Yeun presented him with the trophy. Sanada praised the collaborative nature of “Shogun” as a project that bridges East and West.
