On February 1st, a new video titled “And Se Kyung, are you really a scary person?” was posted on Jung Jae Hyung Yojeong Jaehyung’s YouTube channel. During the conversation, Shin Se Kyung—who rose to national fame on the 2009-2010 MBC sitcom—was asked the question fans have continued to ask for over a decade: “Why was the ending like that?”
Faced with the question, Shin Se Kyung could only let out a deep sigh before answering. Jung Jae Hyung noted, “This caused a huge stir at the time. Looking back, it was just a sitcom, but it seemed like a huge social problem.” Shin agreed, replying, “There’s still a stir. I hear about it even now.”
High kick through the roof aired from September 2009 to March 2010 and saw ratings peaks of 24.9%, becoming a cultural phenomenon in South Korea. However, the finale shocked viewers by depicting the deaths of Ji Hoon and Se Kyung in a sudden accident, an ending that starkly contrasted with the lighthearted tone of the sitcom and left many fans heartbroken and angry.
Shin Se Kyung remembered the atmosphere the night the final episode aired. “The last day of broadcast was also the final party,” he said. “We all gathered to watch the finale together. There were also many journalists. But even before anything happened, the atmosphere was strange. It seemed like something huge was happening outside the room.” His story drew laughter, but it also underlined how intense the public reaction was at the time.

Jung Jae Hyung added, “The outside world became really hostile. Watching it again, you realize how much the show was loved.” Shin echoed this sentiment, saying he believes the lingering controversy is evidence of how deeply viewers care about the characters and story.
However, the actress stressed that the topic requires caution. “When it comes High kickyou have to choose your words very carefully, especially when it comes to the ending,” he said. “That was the first time I really felt how powerful public love can be. It made me realize how big it all was, and that’s why I feel like I need to be even more careful.”
Fifteen years later, High kick through the roof remains one of the most beloved and debated Korean sitcoms, with its infamous ending that continues to follow Shin Se Kyung as a defining moment in her career.
