Korean actress Go Yoon Jung has spoken openly about the polarizing dual role setup in the hit drama Can this love be translated?revealing that the experience was as shocking for her as it was for viewers.
In the series, Go Yoon Jung plays star Cha Moo Hee while also playing her alter ego Do Ra Mi. The unconventional narrative choice sharply divided audiences, with some praising its originality while others questioned the concept, jokingly asking whether the story was supposed to be romantic or psychological.
Addressing the controversy in a recent interview with Korean media, Go Yoon Jung admitted that she too was surprised by the direction of the script. “At first I only received the scripts for the first four episodes,” he explained. “I never expected Do Ra Mi to literally enter the real world and become a character who could interact with the male lead. It was a huge shock to me.”
Despite the pressure, the actress said the role ultimately fueled her excitement. “In addition to the stress, there was more waiting” he shared. “It was a style of acting I had never attempted before.”
Go Yoon Jung went on to describe the stark contrast between his two characters. “Moo Hee always speaks in a roundabout way, hiding what he really means,” he said. “But Do Ra Mi is direct, free-spirited and emotionally honest. When feelings come, they just come. Acting as her was very refreshing.”
He laughingly added that Do Ra Mi’s personality is closer to that in real life, while Moo Hee requires a much deeper analysis. “When I played Moo Hee, I had to constantly break lines to find what she wanted to say but she couldn’t. Do Ra Mi, on the other hand, hardly puts up any walls because she’s too honest.”
Speaking about his slow-burn romance with Joo Ho Jin, played by Kim Seon Ho, Go Yoon Jung admitted that he fully understands viewers’ impatience. “When I first read the script, I found myself thinking, ‘When will they finally get together?’” he said. However, he believes that repeated near-misses and emotional misalignment are what make romantic comedies so compelling.
To heighten that sense of tension, he revealed that many scenes included improvisation. “I wanted to turn that frustration into something light and fun,” she explained, “so the pace remained playful instead of heavy.”
As for his chemistry with Kim Seon Ho, Go Yoon Jung described it as a partnership that developed naturally. “We didn’t force ourselves to approach quickly,” he said. “But the chemistry came quickly. For every scene, we shared the same thought: ‘Can we make it a little more interesting?'”
