On October 24, a video of a fortune teller apparently predicted the death of a veteran actress Kim Soo Mi was uploaded to a YouTube channel called Unplus, which features videos of shamans making predictions about public figures.
Kim Soo Mi died on October 25 after suffering hyperglycemic shock. But the shaman in the YouTube video apparently saw it coming a day earlier, as suggested by the video’s title, “Kim Soo Mi is in serious trouble… I see her sad harvest… What will happen to Kim Soo Mi from now onwards?” At the time of writing, the video has garnered over 280,00 views, garnering significant attention.
While many were initially in awe of the fortune teller’s supposed “prediction”, it was later revealed that the title and thumbnail of the video had been changed soon after the actress’ death to make it appear as if the shaman had predicted it . The content of the video also made it very clear that the changes were made to mislead viewers, as it was the opposite of what the title suggested. The shaman in the video predicted that Kim Soo Mi’s career would bring her great fortune next year.
The video sparked anger among netizens who accused the channel of exploiting the actress’s death for profit. The backlash grew so much that the comments section of the video was deactivated.
The channel’s operator, however, denied accusations that he had changed the title and told the media that the shaman had indeed predicted Kim’s death, but that it had been changed to soften the impact. Despite the negative reaction, the channel uploaded more videos about Kim Soo Mi, inviting further reactions.
