The criterion was not followed according to fans.
THE Korean Big Music Awards 2024 (KGMA) were criticized for alleged unfair practices after the conclusion of their first day, sparking widespread criticism online.
Fans took to social media and forums, expressing concern that the awards favored featured artists over the deserving winners. The controversy has particularly flared up BTS‘S J-Hope, whose fans felt it was unfairly overlooked.
The KGMAs use a scoring system that assigns 20% to expert ratings, 45% to performances, and 35% to fan votes. Since fan voting carries a lot of weight, many fans actively participated, even spending money to secure top spots for their favorite artists.
J-Hope, supported by his ARMYs, secured first place with an overwhelming 81.1% of the votes. BLUE followed with 9.8%, e BE’O came third with 4.2%. Yet despite J-Hope’s lead, he didn’t take home an award, leaving fans questioning the legitimacy of the results.
Instead the “Best Hip Hop” award went to Lee Young Jiwho placed sixth with only 0.6% of the votes.

The controversy didn’t stop there. In the Best Band category, the newly formed all-female band QWER was announced as the winner. This decision sparked outrage as QWER had placed third with only 0.57% of the fan votes. PLAVE, in the lead with 89% of the votes, e DAY6in second place with 9.5%, they were left empty-handed.

Fans expressed frustration with what they perceived as KGMA prioritizing participation over actual voting results. Many have accused the awards of exploiting fan dedication and financial contributions while ignoring actual vote counts.
- “Let’s boycott these shady awards shows…”
- “If this isn’t a scam, then what is?”
- “Enough with these paid votes; it’s just milking money from the fans.
- “Someone should report this as fraud; would be captured.
- “Didn’t they see this backlash coming? We should have avoided this mess.”
