Celebrities across Korea have expressed their condolences to the victims of the Jeju plane crash, one of the deadliest accidents in the country’s history for decades.
The plane crash, which occurred on December 29, occurred at Muan International Airport when the Boeing 747 skidded along a runway on its belly before crashing into a fence, bursting into flames upon collision.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok of South Korea declared Muan County a special disaster area and initiated a period of national mourning that will continue until January 4.
Big Bang’s G-Dragon posted an image of a condolence flower on his Instagram account on Sunday, to honor the 179 victims who died, out of a total of 181 passengers. Only two passengers survived the crash.
Singer Kim Jang Hoon canceled his concert scheduled to be held in Suncheon, South Jeolla, following news of the accident.
“It is not easy for artists and organizers to cancel concerts or events like this,” Kim wrote in a social media post Monday.
“I thank the organizers for complying with my requests despite the expected financial damage and customer complaints.”
Red Velvet’s Wendy shared her condolences on SBS Power FM’s December 30 broadcast Wendy’s Youngstreet.
“When we think about, comfort and care about the people around us, we call it ‘caring for them,’” he said.
“Now is the time when we must use our hearts without holding back. If we use our whole hearts to comfort people who are difficult to express in words, our sincerity will reach them. The fortunate thing is that our hearts grow the more we use them, so it’s okay to use them as much as we want,” he continued.
“I will also do my best to comfort you with all my heart. I pray that the deceased can rest in peace. I would like to express my condolences to the bereaved family. I think the best thing I can do today is to spend time saying kind words and offering comfort to many people. I would like to once again express my condolences to the bereaved families.”
Girl group Jeanz, formerly NewJeans, also honored the victims during scheduled appearances in Japan for the 66th Shining! Japanese recording awards.
The girls shared a photo of themselves on their self-managed Instagram account “jeanzforfree”, wearing black ribbons on the collars of their white stage dresses in tribute to the victims.
“With sincere condolences,” they wrote.
