On October 23, K-pop icon G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-yong) received the prestigious Okgwan Cultural Medal from the South Korean government at the Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards, held at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul.
This honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and global dissemination of Korean popular culture (Hallyu). At 37, G-Dragon became the youngest artist to receive the Okgwan Medal, marking a symbolic milestone in his 20-year career as one of K-pop’s most influential figures.
It’s remarkable to reflect on the fact that just two years ago G-Dragon faced a major career crisis. On October 25, 2023, reports emerged accusing him of using illicit substances, sparking public outrage and threatening the future of BIG BANG. The group seemed to be on the verge of disbanding and G-Dragon was seen as the last vulnerability.

During the investigation, he voluntarily cooperated with the authorities on November 6, 2023, presenting himself at the police station with composure and a slight smile. At the end of November he was officially acquitted of all charges, confirming his innocence.
His social media post during the controversy, “Everything will return to its right path” it symbolized his unshakable belief in truth and resilience.
Following his dismissal, G-Dragon carefully rebuilt his career. In October 2024 he released the single ENERGYmarking a powerful return with BIG BANG al MAMA Awards. His third studio album, Supermanfurther cemented his artistic maturity and global influence.

G-Dragon embarked on a world tour, performing in Asia, Europe and the Americas, cementing his status as a global K-pop icon. At 37, he has evolved from the rebellious pioneer of Heartbreaker to a composed artist who understands the balance between light and dark in his career.
