Newjeans reveal struggles to mental health in a legal battle: “Having nightmares, taking antidepressants”

On July 25, the third hearing in the civil case presented by Ador against Newjeans to confirm the validity of their exclusive contract was held at the central district court of Seoul (Civil Division 41, head judge Jeong Hoe-Il).

During the trial, Newjeans’ legal representative claimed that telling members to return to Ador and Hybe was similar to telling a school bullying of the school to go back and endure abuses in the same school, stating that their request to interrupt the contract was justified. The group compared their situation to the “victims of bullying”, “citizens left unprotected by invaders” and “a younger brother was beaten by an older brother”, underlining their inability to return to Ador under his current structure.

They also made a metaphorical comparison, saying, “A competent general who achieved great success in battle was beheaded for giving a advice to Frank to the king, leaving the people not protected by external threats”. In this analogy, the “competent general” refers to the former CEO of Ador Min Hee-Jin, who was decisive in Newjeans’ success, while “The People” represents the members of the group.

The group also compared Min Hee-Jin to a mother who studied them at home and Hybe to a violent father, stating, “The mother was driven out, and now the father is saying that a better mother will find us and wants us to return.”

Newjeans He also revealed the emotional toll that the 18 -month dispute took over them, affirming, “Also to go near the Hybe building causes cardiac palpitations and, after visits, we need cure for depression.” They claimed to be forced to satisfy the contract and perform in such conditions would violate their personal rights.
