NewJeans may be a 2-year-old band, but they’re no strangers to recognition. After their debut in 2022, they’ve quickly been racking up awards and breaking records left and right with hit after hit — the latest being fan favorite “Super Shy” which just won a spot on the Top 100 Pitchfork’s 2020s songs so far.

The catchy track from the 5-member group did not hesitate to take 13th place on the list of the American publication, released on October 1st.
NewJeans is the only K-pop group to make the roster. What’s more? They even surpassed hits from other global artists like Cardi B’s “WAP”, Beyoncé’s “ALIEN SUPERSTAR”, Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u”, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and many more!

According to Pitchfork, “Super Shy” is NewJeans’ “simplest masterstroke”, adding that it “captures the vertigo of possibility”. The publication, known for its thorough and rigorous criticism, praised the song’s drum n’ bass beat which does not become overbearing and provides a breezy atmosphere throughout.
Culture journalist Joshua Minsoo Kim wrote: “The NewJeans invite you to savor the fantasy, all members singing as if heaving the sigh of a daydreamer.”

A track under the extended play “Get Up”, NewJeans “Super Shy” was released in July 2023 in collaboration with The Powerpuff Girls to commemorate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
Hence, the members were seen discussing superpowers in the music video and the animation style is “pixelated”, an obvious homage to the popular series. At one point, the five girls also transformed into their own versions of the Powerpuff Girls.
