Despite being broadcast on a lesser known network, “The Witch” emerged as a surprise success in the competitive dramatic scene of the South Korea weekend. The series reached a record audience of 3.5% in its second episode , an increase of 145.8% from its debut, overcoming its competitor “When the Stars Gossip”, which only obtained a score of 1.9% for the last episode.
The drama fascinated the spectators with its engaging plot and its exceptional performances. “The Witch” is adapted by the webtoon with the same name by the famous author Kang Full, and his success has led to great expectations in the Korean acting sector.
“The Witch” is a mysterious romantic drama on Dong-Jin (Park Jin-Young), a man determined to break the curse surrounding Mi Jeong (Roh Jeong-Eui), a girl labeled a “witch” of society. Despite the tragic deaths or accidents of many men around Mi Jeong, including his father, Dong-jin refuses to believe in the so-called “curse of death”. Choose to stay by his side, offering comfort and healing.
In the second episode of “The Witch”, the events that lead to Mi-Jeong labeled a “witch” are further revealed. Roh Jeong-Eui excellently portrays Mi-Jeong’s anguish and loneliness while isolating from the company because of continuous tragedies around her. A powerful emotional moment occurs when Mi-Jeong faces his father’s death, falling into total despair.
The first two episodes are full of a dark and heavy atmosphere, with the rare brightness provided by the character of Park Jin-Young Dong-Jin. He plays a long-standing classmate who, despite the “curse of death”, is located alongside Mi-Jeong, trying to demonstrate that he is not responsible for the misfortunes that surround men in his life.
With “When the Stars Gossip” close to its end, the assessments of “The Witch” will be expected to continue to rise, injecting fresh energy into the dramatic end of the weekend after months of overwhelming performances.
