The sudden announcement of martial law in South Korea made headlines around the world and in the K-pop community, MONSTA X’s IM went viral for announcing the latest news during a late-night radio broadcast.
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced martial law, marking the first declaration since 1987, when South Korea went through a democratization process, and 1979, when its third president Park Chung Hee he was murdered.
According to Business Standard, the surprising move was implemented to protect South Korea’s liberal democracy from threats from North Korea. Following the statement, the country entered a state of alarm and affected the public, as well as the Korean music industry.
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), numerous clips were shared, showing IM hosting a live broadcast of KBS CoolFM’s “MONSTA X IM’s Kiss the Radio.” The incident coincided with the emergency announcement of martial law, forcing the idol to report breaking news in real time.
