“Love Scout” has only been on the air for two weeks, but has already proven to be a “dark horse” on the weekend drama schedule. The drama needed just three episodes to reach double-digit ratings. Episode 3, in particular, saw a notable leap in viewership, recording an impressive 10.5% – a rare and notable growth for a Korean drama.
Initially, episode 1 recorded a modest rating of 5.2%, which grew slightly to 6.5% in episode 2. However, within just one week, fueled by strong word of mouth, the drama has exceeded the double-digit threshold. Now it aims for the first place currently held by “The Tale of Lady Ok,” which boasts the highest rating among Korean miniseries with over 11%.
The 201% increase in just two episodes is attributed to the drama’s unique plot, a role-reversal dynamic between the male and female leads, and the explosive chemistry between Han Ji Min and Lee Joon Hyuk. While the setting remains a typical office love story, “Love Scout” turns the usual cliché on its head. Instead of the archetypal domineering male CEO, this time the role falls to Han Ji Min. His character, Ji Yeon, is a powerful, stern, talented and wealthy CEO, but at the same time hilariously clumsy and disorganized .
Meanwhile, the male protagonist takes on the role of a perfectionist secretary who excels at work, handles household chores with ease and is also a doting single father. This refreshing role reversal sets “Love Scout” apart, offering a new perspective on a familiar theme. Additionally, although the drama is a romantic comedy, its dialogue is down-to-earth and realistic, avoiding overly cheesy or overly sentimental jokes – a definite plus for viewers.
Of course, the most crucial element of any romantic drama is the chemistry between the leads. Han Ji Min and Lee Joon Hyuk managed to ignite sparks with just a few scenes together (despite their characters initially loathing each other). In episode 3, their chemistry reached its peak with a scene in which the secretary protects the female CEO with her daughter’s pink cartoon-print umbrella. While romantic umbrella scenes are a common cliché in Korean dramas, the whimsical choice of a playful, pink umbrella added a charming and memorable touch.
The exceptional duo, combined with their dazzling visuals, quickly turned Han Ji Min and Lee Joon Hyuk into one of the most “shippable” couples on screen. Fans were even hoping that the two might date in real life, only to find out that Han Ji Min recently confirmed a relationship with a younger guy. However, this did not dampen viewers’ enjoyment of the drama, as the two actors delivered an exceptional collaboration.
