A man in his 30s has been arrested after stabbing an 18-year-old student to death in Suncheon, South Korea. The horrific incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday in a parking lot.
According to Suncheon police, the victim was attacked at around 12.44am and suffered serious injuries. Although she was rushed to a nearby hospital, she was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities managed to track down the suspect using CCTV footage and witness statements.
The suspect was arrested around 3 a.m. while arguing with another pedestrian. At the time of his arrest, police confirmed that he was drunk. The man reportedly lived near the crime scene and during interrogation denied involvement in the murder. Police only recently identified the weapon used in the attack.
Further details revealed that the suspect, known only by his surname, Park, took a knife from the restaurant he runs in Suncheon. Before the murder, he had consumed four bottles of soju and ordered snacks from his shop. After obtaining the knife, Park wandered the streets and accidentally met the victim about a kilometer from his restaurant. He followed her and stabbed her several times, leading to her death.
Park immediately fled the scene, even leaving his slippers behind as he ran. He abandoned the knife about 500 meters from the crime scene and later stopped at a pub, where he drank half a bottle of beer before being arrested. He told police he could not remember the events clearly due to the alcohol he had consumed.
Police are currently considering whether to release the suspect’s personal data, including his photograph and other identifying information.
