A popular former Premier League player, Jesse Lingardfaces police investigation in South Korea.
Lingard, an attacking midfielder known for his tenure with Manchester United in the English Premier League before his recent move to FC Seoul, shared a photo on Instagram of himself riding an electric scooter through the streets of Seoul.
Although the photo has since been deleted, Lingard’s action, riding an electric scooter without a helmet and license, has been criticized. Amid the backlash, Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station said it had launched a preliminary investigation.
According to police, Lingard is suspected of riding an electric scooter without a license in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam District, around 10:20 p.m. Police are said to have started their investigation after seeing related photos posted by Lingard on social media. Police plan to investigate Lingard’s license status and whether he was under the influence of alcohol.
In September 2023, Lingard was caught driving under the influence of alcohol in the UK, which would have resulted in his licence being suspended for 18 months.
Lingard has since explained on Instagram that he was unaware of the applicable law in Korea and that he had supported “Safety first.”

…Of course, I didn’t know the rules for wearing a helmet or getting a license. In England, you can just pick up an e-bike or e-scooter off the street and start riding it…
