Korean mother faces 8-year sentence for stealing her 3-year-old daughter’s school exams

In a case that sounds like a movie script but is tragically real, a South Korean mother faces an eight-year prison sentence for repeatedly breaking into her daughter’s high school to steal exam papers over a three-year period.

The woman, referred to as “A”, is in her 40s and has been charged with “special theft” and “nighttime burglary”. During the trial held on November 26 at the Andong Branch of Daegu District Court, prosecutors called for a harsh sentence, highlighting not only the repeated nature of the crimes but also the defendant’s lack of remorse and attempt to destroy evidence during the investigation.

The scandal has rocked South Korea’s education system, known for its high-pressure academic environment. According to the indictment, A gained unauthorized access to his daughter’s school in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, on at least ten separate occasions between 2023 and 2025. During these break-ins, he stole midterm and final exam papers in advance, allowing his daughter, referred to as “D,” to consistently rank first in her class.

A was not acting alone. Two accomplices also face serious charges:

  • B, a 30-year-old contract teacher, is accused of stealing all the three-year exams and received 31.5 million won in exchange. Prosecutors asked for a 7-year sentence and repayment of the bribes.
  • C, a 30-year-old school administrative officer, faces a 3-year prison sentence for contributing to the scheme.

In court, A tearfully apologized, saying: “I am deeply sorry to the school and other parents. I made a terrible mistake out of the wrong love for my daughter. I became the kind of mother who ended up dragging her daughter to court. Please give me a chance to live with my daughter again.”

His daughter D also apologized: “I sincerely apologize to everyone who was affected. I deeply regret that I disappointed my classmates who studied hard alongside me.”

The case only came to light in July 2025, when the school’s security system was activated during the final exam period. Investigators found overwhelming evidence of repeated unauthorized entry and evidence theft.

Public opinion remains divided, with many expressing sympathy for the daughter while condemning the adults involved for manipulating an already stressful academic system. The final verdict is expected soon and could set a precedent for how far the legal system will go to defend the integrity of education.
