A man in his 50s has been sentenced to prison for causing the death of his wife, who suffered from hearing and intellectual disabilities, through his gross negligence.
On November 8, KST, the 12th Criminal Division of Daegu District Court, indicted Mr. A, a 59-year-old man, on charges of confinement and abandonment resulting in death. He was sentenced to two years in prison.
According to the investigating authorities, Mr. A confined his wife, Mrs. B, a 54-year-old disabled woman, in a small room in their house from November 2022 to January 2023. He severely neglected her basic human needs, not providing her with meals adequate. Eventually, he starved to death.
Mr A was reportedly dissatisfied that his wife was having difficulty communicating and locked her in a small room. He blocked the door with a cupboard to prevent her from leaving the room and even nailed the window frame to prevent it from opening. Furthermore, he also placed a lock on the small door leading outside, located right next to the room where Mrs. B was locked up. This was to prevent her from meeting the neighbors outside the house, even if she managed to get out of the room.
In early January last year, Mrs B suddenly collapsed while walking down the corridor leading to her backyard. Although she called her husband, he simply took her back to the small room and left her there without providing her with any medical assistance. The room didn’t even have heating. Mrs. B died the next day from complications due to severe starvation. At the time of his death he weighed only 20.5 kg.
After his death, Mr. A was investigated and sent to the prosecutor’s office, which sent him to trial. In March, he was tried by a jury in which prosecutors asked for a six-year prison sentence. But the seven jurors could not agree on a single verdict. Although they unanimously found him guilty of the confinement charge, they had differing opinions on the charges of abandonment and neglect resulting in death.
The court ultimately sentenced him to two years, considering that Mr A himself suffered from borderline intellectual disabilities but showed no remorse.
The sentence was strongly criticized by netizens as they believed that a two-year prison sentence was too short for his crime.
