“…tired of queer characters being erased.”
Kim Tae Ri is set to star in the new project Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born, which is based on the webtoon. When it was announced, it received a lot of attention, but is now facing backlash due to its approach to the GL storyline in the original.
It was recently announced that MBC sued the production team of tvN claiming that they brought the series to tvN without MBC’s consent. Amid the rights controversy, there have also been comments about the GL (girls love) aspect of the project.
In the original narrative, there is a character named Bu Yong and his relationship with the main character…

Specifically, regarding the issues with MBC and tvN, a source revealed what happened during the discussion about GL’s plot.
We have held script readings with several actors at MBC, and since the original webtoon deals with GL (Girl Love) themes, which are sensitive, discussions were also held about character adaptations. It is a matter of principle. The production company has never apologized or attempted to negotiate. Is it not understandable why MBC feels a strong sense of betrayal?

While Korea may still be fairly traditional when it comes to views on sexuality, netizens couldn’t hide their anger at what was happening. Many felt it was doing a disservice to the original and shouldn’t have been made if it didn’t live up to the webtoon. Others pointed out that it was a queer erasure, with many not understanding why, given that LGBT+ storylines are more present in mainstream Korean shows.
- The show should not have been made if that were the case. No respect for the original webtoon anyway.
- So they eliminated the queer character, completely ignoring the original work.
- Then make up a new show… instead of ruining the original webtoon. Haha.
- Well then, this show should never have been made in the first place. I am so sick and tired of queer characters being erased.
- Destroying the original…
- Most Koreans don’t even get the LGBTQ+ references unless the characters are having explicit sex. So why go to extra lengths to get rid of the queer character?
- It didn’t have to be a hardcore R-rated GL. They could have toned it down and made it a subtle sapphic love story. Why get rid of the character entirely? A lot of other shows [with LGBTQ+ characters] transmitted very well.
- Maybe because it’s MBC…? I mean, KBS has had no problem airing queer shows.
