On September 12, various topics regarding Kim Tae-ri’s upcoming K-drama “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” were posted on the Korean forum “theqoo” and garnered considerable attention.
These topics include excerpts from newspaper articles about the K-drama, in which it was confirmed that the production company decided to “change the characters” due to the fact that the original work contains “sensitive” elements of love between girls (GL, or lesbian elements).
In fact, it is known that in the original webtoon of “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, the female protagonist has feelings for a character of the same sex, but this character was removed from the K-drama.
As a result, criticism began to arise: Internet users claimed that if the production company had to make so many revisions to the original lesbian material, they should have created a completely new work instead of adapting a girl love webtoon.
Here are some comments from Internet users:
- First of all, why did they take a girl who loves work and want to end the lesbian relationship?
- It was a lesbian love story from the start, so if they’re going to eliminate the girl-on-girl love elements, then they shouldn’t have used the original at all.
- Why can’t they just write a new script with a lot of heterosexuality that they like? Why do they have to take an original work of Girl Love and try to modify it?
- How can they just turn it into friendship or remove an important character?
- The more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for the character and all I can do is curse. Just do something completely different
- Our country still has a long way to go
- In the end they deleted the queer character without respecting the original work…
