A new episode of the YouTube channel on February 27th “Class B studio apartment” was released with the title “We invited a universe-wide star who was sleeping,” with Kim Hyun Joong in the segment “Class B hearing.” During the show, the hosts revisited his starring role Boys over the flowerswhich has become a cultural phenomenon both in South Korea and abroad.
One host said the drama was number one in terms of viewership at the time. Kim Hyun Joong, however, corrected the statement, explaining that although the series was extremely popular, the highest-rated drama at that time was East of Eden on MBC.
Despite this clarification, the explosive impact could not be denied Boys over the flowers he has had in his career. As it was his first major drama, the project immediately brought him stardom across Asia. Reflecting on that period, he said, “Looking back, I don’t think I fully realized how popular I was. I’d wake up and shoot a commercial, then wake up and shoot something else. I couldn’t even go out freely.”
When the conversation turned to money, one of the hosts commented that he must have earned a huge amount. Kim Hyun Joong responded modestly, “I earned a considerable amount.” Although another guest suggested that perhaps she didn’t know exactly how much she had accumulated at the time because she was constantly working, Kim disagreed. “Of course I knew how much was in my bank account. There’s no one who doesn’t know,” he said.
Kim Hyun Joong, who was 23 years old at the time, was asked if he earned about 10 billion won (about $75 million). Kim Hyun Joong replied, “It could have been something more” suggesting that its total earnings may have exceeded the already staggering estimate.
