On the November 17 episode of tvN’s variety show “The Ways of Tasting,” actresses Lee Ji-ah and Kim Go-eun were shown taking on the challenge of writing a gourmet column.
The couple expressed their concerns after hearing the challenge, asking: “Documentation? Do we have to write something? Is it a heavy topic? We thought we were just supposed to drink.Kim Go-eun jokingly said:I think it’s best to leave now. I’m not confident.“
Then he made fun of Lee Ji-ah”You know something about whisky, don’t you? You’re good at writing, so you should write it. So we can credit it as “Written by Lee Ji-ah, fellow traveler Kim Go-eun”“, jokingly shifting the responsibility to Lee Ji-ah, which drew laughter.
Since they both admitted they knew little about whiskey, they decided to seek advice from the experts. The first whiskey expert they met explained: “Whiskey is made from just three main ingredients: water, yeast and grains. Single malt whisky, for example, uses only barley.”
The expert also highlighted the importance of aerating the whisky, “Whiskey is strongest when you first open it. You should keep it in a cupboard because if you see it you will end up drinking it.” Lee Ji-ah said: “We always open a new bottle and finish it the same day.”
Kim Go-eun admitted “I’ve never stored alcohol in a cupboard“, to which Lee Ji-ah added: “We would probably need a lock and key to keep it safe, and we would have to hide the key separately.“
Their first whiskey pairing menu featured halibut carpaccio with lemon vinaigrette. Later, while tasting a Shine Muscat tart, Lee Ji-ah remarked: “They used good whipped cream, 100% fresh cream of animal origin”, surprising everyone.
After tasting the whiskey pairings, the production team asked the two to describe the flavors in a single sentence. Lee Ji-ah jokingly confessed: “I like eating it, but it stresses me out.”
Kim Go-eun reflected “I learned something about how whiskey pairs well with food” before lowering his head and saying with a sigh, “I do not know. I just miss my mother.“
“The Ways of Tasting” follows Lee Ji-ah and Kim Go-eun as they explore renowned restaurants and bars in Korea and Taiwan, experiencing gourmet culture through whiskey and food pairings.
