Kim Da Mi Reflects on Mixed Reactions to ‘Great Flood’: ‘The Script Felt Like a Mathematical Formula’

In an interview held in Seoul on December 22, Kim Da Mi shared her sincere surprise: “I didn’t expect the reactions to be so polarized. I thought there would be more middle ground.” She explained that while differences in interpretations are normal, the stark contrast in viewers’ opinions took her by surprise.

The Great Flood is a science fiction blockbuster set on Earth’s last day, depicting a story of desperate survival as rising floodwaters consume a skyscraper. Kim plays Anna, an AI researcher entrusted with humanity’s last hope, who must face catastrophe while protecting a child.

Although the film’s gender changes and narrative structure received mixed reviews, Kim noted that he did not fully understand how drastic the gender transition would be until he saw the final version. “As I read the script, I didn’t feel the changes much. It wasn’t until I saw the completed film that I thought, ‘I can see how people might perceive it that way.'”

Discussing his character, he admitted, “At first, the script seemed like a mathematical formula. It was complex, even for me. I had to memorize every detail and assign meaning to every line.” Kim also recalled daily hour-long discussions with director Kim Byung Woo, trying to unpack the dense material.

He praised the director’s openness to collaboration. “If I asked questions, he would explain things to me thoroughly. There were even times when, after discussing with me and Park Hae Soo, he would change parts of the script on the spot.” She described the director as a logical and reserved director, but kind-hearted behind the scenes, so much so that he gave her flowers and a handwritten letter at Christmas to thank her for deepening his vision of the film.

Kim Da Mi also mentioned shooting the same scene ten times despite minimal changes. “At first I didn’t understand why we kept reshooting. But eventually I realized that it was all part of the director’s plan,” he said.

Ultimately, Kim expressed hope that viewers will recognize the effort that went into the film. While The Great Flood may not be universally loved, her dedication and ever-evolving collaboration with the director is a testament to the skill behind the production.
