A new wave of controversy is surrounding global girl group KATSEYE after alleged social media comments by member Daniela Avanzini’s father resurfaced online – just as member Manon Bannerman announced an indefinite hiatus from the group’s activities.
On February 21, Manon’s temporary retirement was officially confirmed. The singer then turned to fans on Weverse to reassure them. However, instead of calming the situation, tensions escalated when a viral video circulated with the title: “IT’S OFFICIAL: MANON IS LEAVING KATSEYE INDEFINITELY.”

Under that video, a Facebook account believed by netizens to belong to Rafael Avanzini, Daniela’s father, commented: “THE SHOW MUST GO ON! With or without a member. KATSEYE IS BIGGER THAN A GIRL.” The remark quickly drew mixed reactions, with some criticizing it as insensitive given the sensitive timing.

The controversy deepened when another alleged comment from the same account surfaced. During a discussion comparing Daniela’s dancing skills to those of BLACKPINK’s Lisa, the account allegedly wrote: “If you have to ask DANIELA! Much more prepared. Plus she’s also Latina, a big advantage compared to Asian dancers. Her hips are untouchable.”

The statement was widely condemned for its perceived racial overtones and disrespectful comparison. Many social media users labeled the comment “highly problematic” AND “unacceptable,” sharing screenshots on platforms like
Some fans also argued that the comments aimed at both Manon and Lisa carried discriminatory implications. Speculation intensified after Manon was reportedly seen “Pleasure” an Instagram post about racism and unfair treatment of women of color in the industry.

Amid the growing backlash, the group’s management companies, HYBE and Geffen Records, released a joint statement expressing full support for Manon’s decision to suspend activities. The statement emphasizes that KATSEYE remains committed to unity and their global fan base.

At the moment neither Daniela Avanzini nor Rafael Avanzini have issued an official response to the comments that have circulated. Meanwhile, the situation continues to attract widespread attention online, particularly as KATSEYE works to promote a message of cultural diversity and global representation in their lineup.
It remains to be seen whether further clarification will be provided, but the incident has undeniably sparked broader conversations about sensitivity, representation and responsibility in today’s interconnected music industry.
