JY Park resigns as director of JYP after meeting Xi Jinping and aims for a broader K-pop vision

K-pop producer and singer Park Jin Young has officially stepped down from his role as in-house director at JYP Entertainment, drawing widespread attention to the next chapter of his career and his broader ambitions for the global future of K-pop.

According to reports on March 10, JYP Entertainment announced that Park Jin Young will resign from his position as internal director and will not seek a new appointment at the company’s shareholder meeting scheduled for March 26. The unexpected decision comes about six months after he was appointed co-chairman of the Popular Culture Exchange Committee under President Lee Jae Myung.

Last September, the presidential office confirmed Park Jin Young’s appointment through chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik, describing the veteran artist as “one of Korea’s representative singers who has long contributed to the globalization of K-pop.” The administration expressed hope that its involvement would help expand cultural exchanges and allow Korean popular culture to thrive on a broader international stage.

Park Jin Young also addressed the nomination via social media, acknowledging that accepting a government role was not an easy decision for someone who works in the entertainment industry. “Taking the government job felt burdensome and troubling in many ways,” he wrote. “But K-pop is currently facing an extraordinary opportunity and I felt we must seize it.”

The producer also highlighted that his experience working directly in the industry could help highlight the need for stronger institutional support. He said he intends to help develop effective systems that provide better opportunities for younger artists and allow K-pop to take another step forward globally.

His activities quickly spread beyond Korea’s borders. In November last year, Park Jin Young attended a Korea-China state banquet as co-chairman of the cultural exchange committee, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. After the meeting, the singer shared on social media that he was honored to speak with the Chinese leader and expressed hope that popular culture can bring people from both countries closer together.

The move is also in line with remarks previously made by Park Jin Young on variety programs, in which he revealed that he has already mapped out a five-year roadmap for the future of K-pop. Known as the producer behind numerous K-pop stars and hit songs, he has long been considered one of the most influential figures in the industry.

Even though he will step down from JYP Entertainment’s internal leadership role, Park Jin Young will not leave the company entirely. Instead, he plans to focus on creative work as an artist, mentoring younger artists and expanding outside activities related to the K-pop industry.

Debuting in 1994, Park Jin Young has spent more than 30 years working as a singer, songwriter and producer. Even though he is giving up his position as in-house director, his efforts to shape the global future of K-pop appear far from over, with fans and industry insiders closely watching what his next move will be.
