In a recent interview with iMBC Entertainment at BH Entertainment headquarters in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Jung Chae-yeon discussed JTBC’s Wednesday drama “Family by Choice” (written by Hong Si-young, directed by Kim Seung-ho).
“Family by Choice” is a love story about three individuals who, although not related by blood, form an unbreakable bond during their adolescence. It is based on the Chinese drama “Go Ahead”.
In the series, Jung Chae-yeon plays Yoon Ju-won, the owner of Daldal Bakery. His character is direct, says what he thinks and tends to forget bad events the next day.
Ju-won shares a family bond with Kim San-ha (played by Hwang In-youp), despite having no biological connection. Over time, their relationship evolves into a romantic relationship.
Reflecting on the theme of the drama, Jung Chae-yeon said, ““Family by Choice” made me think a lot about what truly defines family. It’s not just blood ties or eating together: it’s the simple act of gathering around the same table that can create a family.”
When asked which scene made her heart skip a beat during filming, Jung Chae-yeon called it the “tunnel scene.” He shared: “We shot this scene at dawn and the director and crew were completely immersed in the moment that day. Everyone watched in silence, holding their breath, which was funny.“
He explained: “The director sent me a lot of references for the tunnel scene. It was the scene that worried me the most and that I thought deeply about, but thanks to the incredible support of the crew, it felt like we were acting together. My heart was pounding as we shot it.”
Jung Chae-yeon also talked about her efforts to build chemistry with Hwang In-youp. He said: “We talked a lot about how to improve the scenes. On set we worked closely with the director and rehearsed for a long time. I got a lot of help.”
He also mentioned a particularly touching scene. He recalled: “There is a scene where young Hae-jun (Bae Hyun-sung) plays basketball. After hearing someone say “You must be good at basketball because you look like your father”, he trains so hard that his hands develop calluses. That was the most heartbreaking and touching scene for me.”
Meanwhile, the 16-episode drama “Family by Choice” is now available to stream on platforms such as Netflix and TVING.
