Jun Hyun-moo’s admission of erectile dysfunction sparks grim reaction in China

Recently, Chinese netizens’ responses to Jun Hyun-moo’s explanation have been introduced into Korean online communities after gaining traction on several Chinese platforms. According to these posts, many Chinese users expressed solidarity and seriousness, pointing out that Jun Hyun-moo admitted to having erectile dysfunction only to prove that the injections in question were not illegal and that the drug administered in his car was officially prescribed by a hospital. Some reactions were even accompanied by crying emojis.

Unlike the usual tone of derision or hostility sometimes seen in cross-border discussions about celebrities, this case elicited an unusually calm and thoughtful response. Chinese netizens commented on it “this is no laughing matter” and that “everyone was silent” express pity and discomfort rather than humor.

Other reactions included remarks such as “It looks like it will become a meme on a variety show one day.” “It’s hard enough for ordinary people to reveal something like this, let alone a public figure,” “He really came this far to prove himself.” AND “Life must seem unbearably hard.” Reports also found that keywords related to “Jun Hyun-moo’s explanation” rose to the top of real-time trending searches in major Chinese online communities.

Observers pointed out that in Chinese culture, a man’s sense of dignity and sexual ability are closely linked to social status and personal pride. As a result, many Chinese netizens interpreted Jun Hyun-moo’s revelation as an exposure of deeply private vulnerability, which contributed to the respectful and subdued reaction.

Jun Hyun-moo was recently embroiled in controversy over what was dubbed the “Park Na-rae injection gate.” Footage from a 2016 episode of the MBC variety show I live alonewhich shows Jun receiving an IV while traveling in a car, has resurfaced and reignited the debate. This coincided with allegations involving Park Na-rae and suspected illegal medical practices, leading some to wonder if Jun Hyun-moo was also involved.

Although his agency initially denied the allegations, the situation escalated when the police accepted a complaint seeking verification of medical procedures related to Jun Hyun-moo. In response, his agency took the unprecedented step of releasing detailed medical records.

On December 23, the agency said Jun Hyun-moo had received an intravenous injection at a hospital under the supervision of a doctor and was allowed to continue treatment in his vehicle. The leaked documents revealed that he had been prescribed a high-dose erectile dysfunction drug, Mvix (active ingredient: mirodenafil), further drawing public attention.

Despite this strong move, controversy over the alleged illegal medical practice is expected to persist. Kim Sung-geun, spokesperson for the Korean Medical Association, pointed out that even if a doctor prescribed the injection and the initial treatment took place in a hospital, it is basically not allowed to continue the injection inside a private vehicle according to standard medical practice.

As the debate continues, Jun Hyun-moo’s case has highlighted the intense pressure public figures face to prove their innocence, sometimes at the cost of exposing their most private struggles to the public eye.
