“Jeong-nyeon” Kim Tae-ri, a breathtaking birth of a star

“Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” (directed by Jung Ji-in, written by Choi Hyo-bi, produced by Studio Dragon, Studio N, Management MMM, and NPIO Entertainment) is set in the 1950s, just after the Korean War, a time of poverty but also romance. The story revolves around Jeong-nyeon, a “born sound genius,” as she competes and bonds with others on her journey to become the best gukgeuk (traditional Korean opera) actress. The drama has attracted attention with its new focus on “female gukgeuk” and is directed by Jung Ji-in, who previously directed “The Red Sleeve.” The cast includes Kim Tae-ri as Yoon Jeong-nyeon, Shin Ye-eun as Heo Yeong-seo, Ra Mi-ran as Kang So-bok, Jung Eun-chae as Moon Ok-kyung, Kim Yoon-hye as Seo Hye-rang, with special appearances by Moon So-ri as Seo Yong-rye and Lee Deok-hwa as Gong Sun-bu, raising expectations for the drama.

The recently released “growth posters” encapsulate Jeong-nyeon’s exciting journey of growth, sparking curiosity and anticipation. Kim Tae-ri’s character, Yoon Jeong-nyeon, is a vocal prodigy who moves from Mokpo to Seoul alone, aspiring to become a gukgeuk actress. Not only is she an all-round singer, but she also possesses strong survival skills, fierce determination, and a charming and easy-going personality that allows her to easily make friends.

The posters showcase Jeong-nyeon’s journey through three distinct images. The first image captures Jeong-nyeon practicing gukgeuk alone in her hometown of Mokpo, completely immersed in her practice against the backdrop of a lush village. Although her efforts are a bit unrefined, her earnest demeanor reflects the budding potential of a young talent.

In the second image, Jeong-nyeon is seen joining the “Maeran Theater Company,” the most prestigious gukgeuk troupe of the time. Instead of being intimidated by the many eyes watching her perform, Jeong-nyeon confidently welcomes the attention.

The final image reveals Jeong-nyeon as a full-fledged gukgeuk actress, radiating charisma. Her stunning costume and makeup are striking, but what really captures the attention is the aura of a star that Jeong-nyeon exudes. She stands in the spotlight, shining brightly like the brightest star in the sky.

The sequence of these three images together resembles the powerful flapping of a bird’s wings as it soars into a new world. Even with just these three images, the emotional impact of Yoon Jeong-nyeon’s journey as a vocal prodigy in Mokpo is palpable, heightening curiosity about how her growth will be portrayed in the drama.

tvN’s new Saturday and Sunday drama “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” will premiere on Saturday, October 12 at 9:20 p.m.
