A Japanese magazine recently conducted a poll asking viewers which artists they wouldn’t want to see again NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Two K-pop artists made the list.
NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassenalso known as NHK Red and White Song Battle, is a world-famous annual television program in Japan where famous artists are placed in different teams and compete with their performances. In recent years, K-pop artists have been invited to the show due to the growing popularity of K-pop.
In 2023, K-pop groups like SEVENTEEN, Stray children, New JeansAND THE SERAPHINS performed in the show. Also, groups composed of Japanese members but managed by a K-pop agency, such as TWICE’S MiSaMo AND NiziUthey were invited too.
The survey was conducted based on the 2023 artist list, and two K-pop artists made it to the top five in their respective teams.
NiziU placed 4th on the red team. They appeared on the show four times and one viewer commented: “They are no longer trendy. I lost interest in them a long time ago.Another interviewee sees them as a Korean group and therefore does not need to appear on the Japanese show.
The Stray Kids also placed 4th, but on the white team. Unlike NiziU, who have performed on the show many times, Stray Kids made their first appearance just last year. Some comments from Japanese viewers include: “I don’t know them at all and have never listened to their songs. Why am I on the show?” AND “The show has historical significance in Japan. There should only be Japanese artists.”
It will be interesting to see which K-pop artists, if any, are invited to the 75th show this year.
