IU’s malicious commenter was her former middle school student: ‘Constant harassment, please stop now’

On November 11, IU’s agency EDAM Entertainment said: “We have filed complaints for serious cases that meet the criminal requirements among illegal acts including: threats against Artists, insults, defamation through the dissemination of false information, unfounded accusations of plagiarism due to defamation, sexual harassment, distribution of obscene material, threats of death and privacy violations, creation and distribution of deepfake content (photos and videos in Al format) and other illegal information distribution activities (hereinafter collectively referred to as “lllegal” Acts’).

IU’s side revealed: “To date, approximately one hundred and eighty (180) persons have been reported as accused and additional charges are continually being filed.”

To date, six cases of fine with summary proceedings, three cases of suspended prosecution with mandatory investigation and one case of suspended probation with probation supervision have been issued as sentences or dispositions. Among them, an individual who committed cyberbullying through defamation, sexual harassment and death threats against IU with unfounded false information was fined KRW 3 million, but the defendant has appealed this decision and awaits the the outcome of a formal process.

In particular, IU’s side revealed that one of those responsible for defaming IU through a foreign server is believed to be former students of IU Middle School.

The agency said: “Among them, there is a person believed to be an IU Middle School alumni, who has continued to harass the U despite ongoing legal proceedings, and this situation is being addressed.”

Regarding a person who had spread false rumors (espionage accusations) about the DU, the investigating authorities quickly identified the suspect and completed the initial investigation. The UI agency said: “The investigation dragged on as the suspect repeatedly refused several summons from the investigating agency. The suspect’s case has now been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office and is awaiting a decision.

They further stated: “The Company wishes to reiterate that it has no intention of reaching settlements or offering leniency to the perpetrators of these illegal acts. The Company remains steadfast in its commitment to holding malicious actors accountable and will continue to take decisive action. The Company urges individuals involved in illegal online activities to desist immediately.”
