K-pop stars IU and Girls’ Generation’s Yuri have come forward to support fans attending rallies calling for the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol in Seoul’s Yeouido district, showing their care and solidarity with affectionate gestures.
IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, announced on December 13 through its official fan café that the singer had pre-purchased food for fans attending the event. The message read: “To secure Uaenas [IU’s fan club] holding their glow sticks in this cold can keep your hands warm, we have prepared food and hot compresses. Please take care of your health and safety and visit designated stores to collect items.”
The items included 200 pieces of bread, 200 drinks, 100 rice cakes and 200 bowls of gukbap (rice soup), all available at designated bakeries, rice cake shops and gukbap restaurants in Yeouido. Although aimed specifically at fans, anyone could receive the food simply by mentioning “Uaena” in the store. Distribution will continue from December 14th until stocks last.
Likewise, Yuri demonstrated his thoughtfulness by preparing gimbap for fans attending candlelight gatherings. On December 13, Yuri shared a message on a fan platform, saying, “Eat gimbap tomorrow and stay full. Stay safe and healthy. Sing In the New World loud and proud!”
Yuri had prepaid for the gimbap at a shop near Dangsan Station, allowing fans to request it by holding up Girls’ Generation’s light stick, “Sowonbong.” Previously, on December 12, he sent fans a heartfelt message praising their dedication and urging them to stay warm during the demonstrations.
Demonstrations near the National Assembly building saw K-pop fans actively participating, holding glow sticks and playing iconic songs such as Girls’ Generation’s debut track, In the New World, a frequent hymn at these events. Yuri’s support reflects his awareness of the fans’ efforts and the song’s symbolic importance.
