The second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol was passed on December 14, marking the third impeachment motion in South Korea’s constitutional history. The motion received 204 votes in favor, 85 votes against, 3 abstentions, and 8 null votes .
After the vote, the streets of Yeouido, where a demonstration was held calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, filled with the sound of Girls’ Generation’s debut song, “Into the New World.” This song, often sung at rallies, continued to capture attention after the impeachment decision.
Released in 2007, “Into the New World” was the title track of Girls’ Generation’s first single. Known for its hopeful and encouraging lyrics, the song remains beloved by fans. It was featured at numerous rallies, including those calling for impeachment, along with other songs such as “Crocodile” by G-Dragon and “Next Level” by aespa.
Girls’ Generation’s Yuri, who saw fans participating in the event with “wish sticks”, expressed her admiration, “The wishing sticks were so beautiful and amazing. Listening to “Into the New World” was amazing. I also listen to it every day.” On December 14, Yuri also visited a nearby gimbap restaurant in Dangsan-dong, Seoul, where he pre-ordered gimbap for fans, making headlines.
After the first impeachment motion was rejected on December 7, demonstrations calling for President Yoon’s impeachment continued. Many citizens participated, holding glow sticks instead of candles to express their requests. Celebrities such as IU, Girls’ Generation’s Yuri and NewJeans supported the rally by pre-ordering meals and drinks for attendees, while director Park Chan-wook purchased all the bread from a bakery in Yeouido to share with rally attendees.
Additionally, actress Go Min-si celebrated the passage of the impeachment motion by posting a photo and video on social media with clapping emojis and a flag reading “The people are the masters,” expressing her stance on the political situation.
