Girl group ILLIT are once again at the center of a plagiarism controversy, following their appearance at the Music Bank Festival in Japan. Fans and netizens alike have pointed out notable similarities between ILLIT’s latest stage and the iconic “Attention” dance break – and this time even Korean netizens are recognizing the similarities.
Social media was filled with comparisons shortly after the show aired. On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), side-by-side clips showing ILLIT’s choreography alongside NewJeans’ routine quickly went viral. Viewers noticed overlapping elements not only in the dance movements but also in the musical cues and stage style, including hair and clothing choices.
The chorus of criticism grew louder as more and more users chimed in, suggesting the similarities went beyond coincidence. Many argued that the imitation seemed intentional, with some blaming HYBE, the shared umbrella company behind both groups, for recycling concepts and setting artists up for a public backlash.
Instead of targeting the idols themselves, online comments shifted the blame towards the agency. Korean netizens expressed frustration with the company’s approach, stating:
“Honestly, if HYBE cared about ILLIT, they wouldn’t make them do something like this.”
“Why do they make him copy his hair, clothes and even the choreography?”
“They are setting both groups up to be hated.”
“At first glance, I thought it was NewJeans performing again.”
Others, even those who don’t like NewJeans, admitted that the resemblance was hard to ignore.

This isn’t the first time ILLIT has been accused of mirroring NewJeans. As discussions continue to unfold online, many fans are calling for clearer artistic distinctions between the two groups to avoid further confusion and controversy.
