According to an exclusive report by TV Chosun on September 2, Shin, a woman in her 50s and the mother of actress Han So-hee, was arrested on charges of starting and operating illegal gambling businesses.
The report says that from 2021 until the end of last month, Shin allegedly operated 12 gambling establishments in cities such as Ulsan and Wonju, using traders who acted as his representatives.
Customers visiting these establishments accessed a gambling site, of which Shin was the primary distributor, and used the site to purchase gambling money and play games such as baccarat.
Shin had previously been fined for a similar offence and reportedly has a criminal record, including fraud charges.
In 2019, Shin borrowed KRW 40 million (about USD 29,865) from an acquaintance, Mr. A, and listed his daughter Han So-hee as a co-guarantor. When she failed to repay the debt, Mr. A filed a civil lawsuit against Han So-hee, seeking the original KRW 40 million plus additional interest for the delayed repayment.
At the time, Han So-hee explained that she was raised by her grandmother after her parents divorced when she was about five years old, and had little contact with her mother. She only realized the debt after she turned 20. Although she had paid off her mother’s debts before her debut, the misuse of her name for further debts continued.
Ultimately, in both the first and second trials, the Ulsan District Court ruled that the incident was not related to Han So-hee.
