The group’s name, “GOT7”, means “seven lucky people”.

Career
Pre-debut
Before GOT7’s debut, members JAY B and Jinyoung (formerly known as ‘Junior’), had already debuted as a duo called “JJ Project”. Additionally, Jackson, Mark, BamBam and Yugyeom appeared as JYP trainees for YG’s survival program “WIN: Who Is Next”.
Debut and JYP Entertainment
GOT7 made their official debut in January 2014 with the single “Girls Girls Girls”, which features strong choreography including acrobatic and martial arts-inspired moves. The album including “Girls Girls Girls”, “Got It?”, was released a few days later, gaining enormous attention to the point of reaching the top of the Billboard World Albums Chart.
As a group formed with the aim of international promotions, GOT7 quickly expanded their activities overseas, starting with two debut showcases in Japan in April 2014.
They made their Japanese debut with the single “Around the World” on October 22 of that year, and began their first Japan tour just a few weeks earlier.
The group also released its first album in November 2014. In 2015, GOT7 continued to demonstrate their global popularity with their Asian Showcase Tour.
In March 2016, GOT7 released “Flight Log: Departure”, the first album where the members contributed songwriting and composition. Subsequently, on April 28, the group kicked off its first world tour.
In 2017, the JJ subunit returned to prominence, while Jackson made his solo debut on August 26 of the same year.
At the time, having founded his own label and being active as a solo artist, Jackson withdrew from Japanese promotions with GOT7 to “maintain his health condition”.
In 2019, GOT7’s second subunit Jus2 debuted the mini album “Focus.” Furthermore, over the years, the boy group has consistently released various successful albums.
Departure from JYP, focus on solo activities
On January 11, 2021, JYP Entertainment officially announced that all members of GOT7 would leave the agency after their contracts expired.
Despite departing with each member going to a different agency, on February 20, GOT7 released the song “Encore,” which is about the boy group’s love for their fans.
In 2022, GOT7 made a comeback with the entire group and held some group fancons, before members JAY B and Jinyoung joined the army.
During this time, each member focused on their solo careers.
Now, on December 20th, after the resignation of Jinyoung and JAY B, GOT7 announced that they will release their twelfth mini album “Winter Heptagon”, showing their strong bond as a group despite the separation from agencies.
Controversy and personal life
Controversies
In 2023, Jackson was accused of charging a huge fee to fans who wanted to take intimate photos, leading to criticism that he was using fans as an ATM. The male idol also faced criticism after lashing out at foreign media, which harshly criticized his home country of China.
Meanwhile, Jay B has faced accusations of sending DMs (direct messages) to over 200,000 female influencers, most of whom post sexy photos.
Additionally, Youngjae had to clarify his position after a controversy in which he was accused of using special privileges for Bruno Mars’ concert in Korea.
Dating Rumors
In 2022, dating rumors surfaced between Jackson and (G)I-DLE Yuqi, with some accusing the male idol of cheating on her. However, Jackson’s side denied the rumors.
Additionally, Youngjae was accused of dating fellow single man, LOVEY. However, the male idol’s side quickly denied the rumors, claiming that the two were just colleagues in musical activity.
That same year, JAY B faced dating rumors with Youtuber Pure.D
