The second impeachment motion against South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will be voted on this Saturday, leading major broadcasters to change their programming.
Notably, JTBC announced on December 13 that the programs scheduled for Saturday, December 14 will change due to a special newscast.
As a result, episode 462 of the variety show Knowing Bros and episode 4 of the weekend drama “The Tale of Lady Ok” will not air as scheduled. “The Tale of Lady Ok” Episode 4 has been rescheduled to air on Sunday, December 15 at 10:30 pm (KST).
The cancellation of “The Tale of Lady Ok” disappointed fans. The drama, which moves away from traditional historical narratives to focus on the realistic struggles of servants, follows the journey of resilient protagonist Goo-deok (played by Lim Ji-yeon).
Praised nationally and internationally, the show’s first episode debuted with a rating in the Seoul metropolitan area of 4.2%, rising to 8.1% in the metropolitan area and 7.8% nationwide in the ‘episode 3. The postponement raised concerns about its momentum.
Additionally, both KBS and MBC adjusted their programs in response to the impeachment vote. KBS 2TV’s music reality program “I’m a Singer” will not air this week, MBC canceled its popular variety show “Hangout with Yoo,” while the music program “Show! Music Core” will air earlier than usual, at 10:50 am (KST).
Channel A’s weekend drama “Marry You” will also skip its Saturday episode for the second week in a row.
On the other hand, MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “When the Phone Rings” is still slated for its usual 9:50 pm time slot, though that could change depending on the results of the impeachment vote. Previously, it was canceled for two consecutive weeks, one due to President Yoon’s martial law decision and the other to screen a documentary on Nobel Prize-winning author Han Gang.
Meanwhile, on December 13, the Korean National Assembly considered the second impeachment motion against President Yoon, proposed by 191 opposition and independent lawmakers. The motion accuses the president of violating the constitutional principles of popular sovereignty and separation of powers, as well as abusing martial law powers. Unlike the first impeachment motion, this one also cites allegations that the president, under his command, ordered military and police forces to detain lawmakers, which has become a key issue.
The National Assembly will vote on the second impeachment motion on December 14 at 5 pm (KST). To provide real-time coverage of the vote, broadcasters are expanding special news programming. The outcome of the vote is expected to further influence weekend schedules.
