He has a criminal record.
Former BIG BANG‘S SUPERIOR stars inside Squid game 2the highly anticipated sequel to the hugely successful series. He plays one of the contestants on the show.
As for the casting, the director explained why he was chosen. T.O.P.’s appearance sparked controversy due to his history of drug abuse. According to the director, TOP had shown tenacity during the auditions for the role.
We projected it a lot. He showed a strong will and even took auditions. We asked him to send us a tape and he sent us a video where he worked hard to film him acting. Each time he showed signs of instability [in acting] in the readings we screened him again and he showed a lot of commitment and talent. And he’s also an actor I’ve kept an eye on since the past… Even though his casting was scandalous, we’ve been through too many trials with him to not be able to reverse [the casting]. We decided that we had no choice but to demonstrate to the viewers, through the final result, why this character and this work had to go to the TOP. That’s why we didn’t cancel it and move forward with it.

Although the director spoke out, netizens were not impressed with his casting.
- Wow, I didn’t know you could become an actor just because you want to. Since? LOL, I can’t believe this is their excuse.
- I’m not looking. A criminal appears there shamelessly. Barf.
- Because they squeezed Lee Jin Wook In?
- Huh? Aren’t there many other actors who are desperate to appear and don’t have a criminal record?
- Why is Lee Jin Wook there?
- He needed courage to appear like a failed idol [for the role?]
